Obituary

Jane Morrison Harris Nierenberg, daughter of the late Brevard Ervin Harris, Jr. and Virginia Morrison Harris, died July 23, 2019 in Davidson, NC.

She was a descendent of two signors of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence: John Foard and Neil Morrison; and Dr. Charles Harris, pioneer physician and founder of the first medical school in North Carolina at Favoni, and original Harris land grant in the Poplar Tent area.

She was educated in the Concord school system and was an alumna of St. Mary’s School in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Salem College in Winston-Salem. Jane made her debut in Raleigh at the Terpsichorean Ball and was a member of the North Carolina Society of the Colonial Dames of America.

Her interest in genealogy and the history of the local Concord area let to the co-authorship of “Early Medicine in Cabarrus”, a history of early physicians and their achievements, in cooperation with the late Eugenia Lore. Jane was also instrumental in the establishment of the Lore Local History Room at the main branch of the Cabarrus County Library in Concord.

Jane was first married to the late Joseph E. Hendricks, a Congressman of Deland, FL and later to Jay R. Nierenberg, a real estate developer of NY, NY and Miami, FL.

The family wishes to express sincere gratitude for the kind and compassionate care provided by the entire staff of the Schramm Health Center at the Pines of Davidson, as well as the incredible staff of Hospice & Palliative Care of Lake Norman.

Jane is survived by her daughter, Jill Morrison Nierenberg of Davidson, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church or to the Jane H. Nierenberg and Jill M. Nierenberg Endowed Book Fund at the Library of Davidson College. A graveside service for family will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Concord.

Dear Jill,
I remember your mother starting from the time you and I were in kindergarten. She was so genuinely nice and interesting and such a learned person on the history of the area and the places she traveled. I wish for
you and yours comforting thoughts, prayers and remembrances at her passing. Sincerely, Lynn Price Rorie Mint Hill, NC (former member First Presbyterian Church, Concord)

We would like to express our sincere condolences to you and your family. With deep sympathy, we share your sorrow, after the tears have dried and the goodbyes have been said, all we have to hold onto are the happy memories that we’ve shared with our loved ones who have passed, this is what keeps them alive in our hearts and in our minds, and they will continue to live on, through us. May God give you the strength to endure the pain you are going through and may he embrace you and comfort your family during this difficult time."Jesus said to her: 'I am the resurrection and the life. The one who exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life.'"-John 11:25

Dear Jill, What a full and enriching life Jane enjoyed from her early days on N Union Street to all of her many travels and adventures throughout the country. She had the greatest stories to tell and could tell them better than anyone. She was a walking history book and enjoyed sharing her knowledge. However, her greatest joy came from having you as her daughter. There is a saying "two peas in a pod". That's an understatement for the bond, love and friendship you two shared. I adopted her a long time ago as my NC Mom, especially after my own Mom passed. Thank you for sharing her with me all these years! Many have been blessed to have known such a jewel. Love always, Jan

Dear Jill,
We are so sorry for your loss! Rob and I were lucky to have your mom and you as our neighbors on North Union when we first moved to Concord. We learned so much from Jane about the history of our chosen community and were grateful for your warm welcome both on Union Street and, later at Wyndham Place when you were briefly Rob's sister's neighbor during her battle with cancer.
We will be thinking of you in the days ahead. You were blessed to have a mother who was also your best friend.
Love, Glenda & Rob Steel

Dear Jill,
Your Momma and Mrs Fanning were my first two friends when I started at The Pines. We would sit and have cookies, talk about whatever was on their minds that day and I always looked forward to seeing them after lunch each day. Momma was a wonderful lady, I will miss her. Through her I was given the chance to become friends with you. My deepest and heartfelt condolences to you and the family. Love, Cheryl Santilli
